This text will be used as an in class mentor text to help students analyze the themes of home and identity. The students will not only read, but think carefully about the language used and how the author uses her language to develop these important themes. We will make cross curricular connections to civil right and social justice issues and heroes that are referenced in the book. After reading, the students will carefully consider the important themes in the novel and connect them to their own lives by writing a literary analysis essay to explore these themes.
