My goal is to create a diverse, relatable, and interesting classroom library for my students. My students are diverse and they should see people who look like them, talk like them and feel like them in books. Representation is important. There are too many books with white protagonists and damsels in distress. I picked books with Black, Latinx, Pakistani-American, and Native American main characters who are powerful, kind, and smart. My students are growing into curious world citizens and it is important they read a diverse range of narratives.
I want to give my students access to relatable books; books that represent them and things they are going through. The more they relate to the book the more interested and invested in the book they will be. I want my students to read Yasmin the doctor and think, "I can be a doctor too" or read a Mo book and think, "Hey, that little boy likes to play sports just like me." I want them to read books that make them believe in themselves; I want them to see themselves in the books.
Lastly, the purpose of this project is to create a library that homes interesting stories which excite my students to read. Reading should be fun and stimulating. It is a great way to learn about new things. I want them to see reading can be an enjoyable pastime and a way to escape to different worlds. In my project, I include books about space, basketball, Dog Man, and animals because these are just a few of the things my students love to learn about. This will not only help them become better readers this year but will support them as lifelong learners.
