Our kids have been through a lot this past school year. From virtual learning to hybrid, back to virtual, back to hybrid; nothing about this year has been familiar or comfortable for students. The hardest part of this has been the isolation and related issues it causes. Middle school students crave connection. Some find it through sports, others through the arts. I try to provide a learning environment that is both rigorous and nurturing, as well as meeting students at their developmental stage. In middle school, this means providing students opportunities to talk out their thoughts and collaborate to deepen and display their understanding of academic concepts. The 3-tier carts I have selected will help me to facilitate collaboration and groupwork this upcoming year and in the years to follow. Students are coming back to school having been in isolation for months. Even students who have been attending school in person during our hybrid model have shown difficulty rebuilding peer connections and collaborating for learning. Students will use these carts to house collaborative materials, to take classwork and materials on-the-go for alternative work spaces, and to build a sense of community at the groups where my students will call home for the next school year.
