I was in the 2nd grade when my teacher read the story Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters to me. It was so captivating. It was the first book where I saw myself, and I never forgot it. My teacher used the book to teach us theme, and lessons that fables have. The gist of the story was that kindness to everyone will take you further than being mean and unkind. Reflecting back to that time, I realize that now as a teacher the value of seeing characters that look like you and the lasting impact that it has. These books I selected will make a difference in my students lives because they would get to see themselves represented in high quality text. They are highly motivated, and I think it is important that they are reminded about how much their life matters. I teach Black and Brown students that are constantly told by media that they are not enough. Even the curriculum books they read are either Euro-centered or have fictional animals as characters. I would use the bins to organize the books purchased for the classroom library. I would use the clicker to click through lessons that I teach on the projector without having to be next to my computer. This will enable to keep a better eye out on my classroom in order to support my students. I will use the books I chose to teach standard based lessons, and for pure enjoyment. Students will be allowed to check out these books with our in class library system. They will be allowed to engage with the text in the classroom and at home. Getting these materials will help me create a strong culture classroom culture where my students feel valued which will enable stronger learning outcomes.
