I teach students to develop reading/decoding skills. The materials I use are different from the materials used in their mainstream class. They require a system of organization to allow students to prepare for traveling and learning in the resource room, as well as a home practice. The work students are given is organized within the binders and pocket folders. As the year progresses, the three-ring binder allows the students to remove the learning materials they have mastered and incorporate new learning pages. The dividers allow the students to separate each learning objective; for example, spelling, sight words, vocabulary, etc. The materials requested are basic, but vital in that they allow students to accept responsibility for their daily practice. It is not long before students develop good organization skills which support their work. The reading system used to teach decoding provides opportunities to develop colorful charts to monitor student progress and success. The progress charts are more likely to make it home to share with parents when it is proudly stored in the pocket folders of their own binder. "Certificates of Completion" for each learning step are also taken home to proudly display.
