Speechie Thanksgiving Trouble!
Funded Jan 7, 2022Thank you for the donations; they allowed me to get fantastic materials for my students!
So for my D75 students, I often modify books from rigorous to less rigorous by providing additional visual and verbal supports to target each student's goals. The skills introduced by these new texts include teaching my students how to answer WH questions (i.e., who, what, where, when, and why) by pausing on each page and asking 'Who are the characters? What are they doing? Where are they? and by providing visuals to reinforce and help them distinguish between the WH questions and how to answer WH questions across various contexts. Reading books looks different for every session; for some students, it is a book paired with a modified AAC communication board embedded with a sensory activity. Or, for other students, it is a book paired with a game and integrated with WH visuals. As a speech therapist, I utilized books and interactive games to promote language, follow directions and increase social pragmatic skills. We also use games to label items and identify categories (such as: food, animals, clothes, shapes, and colors). We play 'Jumping Jack' while engaging in conversational topics, answering WH questions, and working on our turn-taking skills. All of my students get excited when we read books; they love the 'How To Catch' books. ”
With gratitude,
Ms. Carolina

The materials have allowed me to teach my nonverbal students core words, which are words that we say daily and that are relevant across multiple contexts and environments.
