I teach struggling readers an array of reading skills. I help them to learn and utilize various reading strategies to help them decode words while building fluency to become stronger more confident readers. My students are often visual learners and benefit most from anchor charts, written examples, and repeating these learned techniques. I follow the I do, we do, you do principle. The items that I am requesting will help my students to learn through visual cues. Teaching in an old school has its ups and downs. While the building has a lot of history, it does not have many modern conveniences as simple as whiteboards. I rely on a small tabletop whiteboard that not all of the students can see. A whiteboard hung on the wall would benefit them greatly. Also, students love writing on the whiteboard. A large one, for each grade, will allow them to do so in fun colors in front of the group. The highlighter tape will work wonderfully when reading big books. One of the main strategies is to be able to highlight a specific word family or sight word for the whole class to see.
