Imagine having to work at home. Where do you complete the majority of your work? Imagine reading a book at home. Where do you read at home? Imagine using a smart device at home. Where do you use your device? Chances are you are in different locations to complete each task. Chances are one of those tasks takes place in a comfortable “S.E.A.T.” Now imagine you can only be in one room to complete all your tasks. Now imagine you can only sit in a cold hard chair. This is why I would like to give student choice in seating. S: Student-Centered E: Engagement A: Arrangement T: Temperament Student-centered Engagement: when you get to pick your spot to work, your engagement will naturally improve. When engagement improves, quality of learning naturally improves. Student-centered Arrangement: when students choose whom they collaborate with, collaboration improves. When collaboration improves, learning improves. Or maybe you prefer to sit in a quiet spot on your own. Either way, the arrangement is up to you. Student-centered Temperament: community is why our classroom is successful. We love like family. We feel like family. The energy given off by student temperature can control the room more than a thermostat. When you are comfortable, you are in a better mood. When the mood remains positive, energetic, and warm in a classroom, the love is stronger. When students are loved and valued, they feel safe. Feeling safe allows you to take risks. Risks are the sweet spot to growth. Imagine this...all from choosing your S.E.A.T.
