This year I incorporated independent reading time into my classes. My students and I read for twenty minutes a day. At first, they did not enjoy this process because they hadn't really ever been able to choose what they read. After a few months, my students were begging for more reading time. I could see how much student choice can impact reading.
Reading is one of the best ways to create more empathic, intelligent citizens of the world, and that's my goal in my classroom. I want to give my students to gift of reading books they love. Reading is so important, and including independent reading in class has allowed many of my students to become self-proclaimed readers (I can't tell you how big of a deal this is in an on-level high-school English class. I do not have a ton of money to create a large classroom library with diverse texts to choose from, but I want my students to have as many options as possible.
