The love of reading and stories start at a young age. Children's literature and publishing have made a lot of progress these past few years to engage readers of all ages, especially around stories that tell different life experiences. Books transport us to different lives and places and, if we're lucky, books also mirror who we are or want to be in life. The books selected for this project reflect my students and other people in our community and provide students with the opportunity to go back in time or imagine the possibilities of their lives ahead! As a first year teacher, I am excited to build out my classroom library with books that will serve as a jumping off point for conversations about identity, difference, oppression, resistance, and feelings. These books will help us discuss important historical and current events and topics in class.
