The addition of these books will enhance the learning in my classroom. The Lightning Thief will be used as a novel study that will encompass nine weeks of learning. Each student will need their own copy of this novel to read, discuss with peers, and write their reflections while citing evidence from the text. This novel will be used in cross-curricular studies: reading, writing, social studies, and science. Using this book, students will develop comprehension skills by making connections to the text and learning about myths. Students will then take their understanding of the archetype of hero stories to create their own. During this, they will also be studying the Greek and Latin roots of words and understand how they can be used to decipher the meaning of words. The theme of Greek mythology will also carry over to our social studies curriculum as we learn about the ancient Greek civilization. And finally, the idea of being a 'lightning thief' will extend into our weather lessons in science. This book is essential for the lessons I have planned for my students. It will allow them an opportunity to learn in a fun and interesting way.
