The students I work with have significant communication needs with several who are currently non-verbal. Many have not yet mastered the precursors necessary for language including cause & effect and joint attention. Social interactions are also difficult for my students. They lack cooperative play skills and do not typically engage in pretend play with their peers. My students prefer to "play" alone, and many of them do not know how to play appropriately with toys. Research shows, children learn best through play! This is especially true for my students. They are not going to learn how to communicate sitting at a table and completing worksheets. This dollhouse will give them the opportunity to learn language in the most naturalistic way. I will be able to model language for my students while playing with the dolls. The things they will learn are endless including: day-to-day vocabulary (i.e. "kitchen", "dresser"), greetings/farewells , asking/responding to questions, basic spatial concepts (i.e. "on", "under"), following simple directions, answering WH questions ("who", "what", "when", "where", "why"), requesting, protesting, and conversational turn-taking (just to name a few). My students not only need to learn to speak, they need to want to speak. This dollhouse along with its dolls and accessories will definitely pique their interest and offer endless communication opportunities!
