The foundation of all reading success is being engaged and interested in what you’re reading. The more interested and engaged the reader is, the more excited they are to read. That excitement leads to more and more reading. In turn, large amounts of reading correlate to higher levels of success. Scholastic reports that, in regards to standardized test achievement, “if you read 3,000 words every day you will be in the top 2%. If you read 20 words every day, you will be in the bottom 2%. About 30% of our second graders are reading below grade level. They are not yet confident readers. Our hopes are to provide books that will encourage confidence and enjoyment, some of the biggest goals we all have for our students. Our goal is to create a classroom environment that fosters a love of learning and success. In doing so, I want to specifically focus on classroom libraries and hone in on creating an inviting space full of high-interest texts that support ALL readers. Second grade is a very pivotal time in a child’s literacy development as well as in school. It is critical that students are engaged in their books, and that they are motivated to read more and more. Series books are the perfect way to make this happen! When students get to know characters in one book, they come to know that character well and want to continue reading and seeing the character grow.
