Most of my students are in 9th grade and have had failures with Math in the past. Therefore, I have them for two periods in a row where we focus on Algebra I and some of the basic math skills. They still struggle with fractions and adding and subtracting. Most of my students have shared that they do want to do well in Math and do want to do well in school. However, when they leave my classroom they face challenges with some lack of parental involvement or other competing priorities. Some of my students do struggle with poverty and unstable home lives and they see school as a 'haven' to be successful.
