I teach in a school district where all of 96.9% of the school district's population is Hispanic and 83.3% are economically disadvantaged. Our special education population is 10.6% and 13.5% are English Learners. I am very blessed to work with the two groups that need the most support: Special Education and English Learners. Just alone is the last 7 years we have had several situations which have been disastrous to our area...floods, tropical depressions, hurricanes, and a bad freeze. As a Special Education inclusion teacher in the high school setting I provide a lot of supplies for my students due to them not being able to get their parents to purchase the items for them. I purchase pencils and notebooks just to name a few. Lately, I have provided sling bags due to the laptops that my students received during the pandemic. I have now realized that my kids need backpacks because the sling bags are not big enough or sturdy enough to carry everything they need. I want them to have a cool backpack that they want to use and put their supplies in it. Like I said, I just want my kids to blend in with all the other kids on campus and not feel left out.
