The selection of texts offers children experiences in everyday life from children of all walks of life. My students develop compassion, empathy and awaken to others, as they recognize are not alone in their struggles. My students are 100% African American. My students face hardship in health concerns, shared parents, guardians and living spaces this year. The group of children I'm blessed to spend the year with work facing challenges of growing, identifying their own learning styles and abilities. The set of books emphasized multicultural lessons to bring to light the problems and joys people of multiple languages, cultures, heritages, traditions, abilities and geographic locations for students with special needs. I teach with the texts engaging children with autism and learning disabilities in reading strategies such as identifying elements of stories retelling the story and becoming familiar with vocabulary. The texts inspire children to examine their everyday lives, traditions and family. Our class explores our own points of view by thinking about our backgrounds. For students with speech impairment, autism and learning disabilities, our class gathers information through artifacts from home or school, online searches, texts and illustration.
