My students love having independent reading time at the beginning of class, and they deserve a big classroom library, full of books they want to read. These are the books that my students are requesting and recommending to each other. They will read more when they have current, high-interest books that are accessible to them.
The practice of daily independent reading has brought new life to my classroom. Students will be polishing their speaking and listening skills when giving book talks, using their favorite passages to analyze and emulate authors' styles, and exploring themes across texts and genres in class discussions. Their reading stamina and vocabulary knowledge will grow. Most importantly, they will develop a lifelong love of reading, which too often wanes during the adolescent years.
Thank you for your help expanding our classroom library!
