A STEM classroom needs to be able to accommodate projects for science, technology, engineering, and math in addition to other subjects. Covering so many topics requires the classroom to be flexible. One minute we may be set up for a formal lecture or presentation and the next it needs to accommodate hands-on group projects. In one of my lessons, the students will have to build their own PPE considering that we are still in a place where protecting yourself from Covid is very important. The rug in the class will allow me the ability to be able to work with students on their basic skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. I teach 4th and 5th grade and I have seen year after year kids do not know their basic facts, sequential order, and/or what a multiple/factor is and this will allow me the ability to be able to teach that with a clear hands-on approach. I will be able to implement multiplication/division games in the classroom using this rug. Project-based learning can be loud and at times chaotic, with each team tackling problems in their own way. In order to make this a productive and effective environment, the classroom must be organized. First, organizing your supplies is most important. Each team can receive a kit of supplies or there can simply be one central supply table. Lastly, the clipboards will allow the students to jot down their ideas as they write. Scientists do not come up with an idea overnight, they have to complete the design process several times. They can use dry erase markers to bring their ideas to life.
