My students have been deeply affected by the way the pandemic has forced us to teach writing. Today almost all instruction and writing is done on the computer, leaving us without traditional pencil and paper to edit, cross out and circle areas that require improvement. This lack of handwritten communication between students and teachers has left students at a disadvantage in learning to craft well-developed essays, stories and creative writing. By giving my students and my classroom an iPad and an Apple Pencil, my students will be able to edit their work by physically writing on a virtual document. This traditional form of communication-turned digital- will allow students to peer edit, group edit, share and collaborate their thoughts and ideas with fellow classmates in the physical classroom as well as with those at home. It will enable me, as their teacher, to see their progress in real-time and be able to effectively communicate my assistance to students. This will enable students to blossom into the lifelong readers and writers that we know they can become.
