One of the countless reasons our school, Project ECHO, is so unique is that our curriculum includes a Life Skills class that attends to Social-Emotional Learning and real-life "adulting" skills. You know all those things you "wish you'd learned in high school?" - filling out a W4, understanding a rental agreement, creating a budget? We cover that! Never learned how to iron a shirt, plan healthy meals, or make a medical appointment? We cover that, too!
This year, we've worked hard to align our SEL lessons with the ISBE Priority Learning Standards for Social-Emotional Learning - and your donation will help us keep it relevant and engaging for the next school year and beyond! Scholastic Choices magazine "helps students develop and apply the skills they need to navigate our world - on and offline" (choices.scholastic.com).
Many of our students are struggling or hesitant readers, but the enticing layout and accessible lexile of these magazines will energize students of all levels. Scholastic subscriptions come with a plethora of supplemental online resources as well, so both teachers and students will have options and accessibility wherever we are.
Teenagers often find it difficult to relate to the characters and historical figures that arise in what they're studying. Within the pages of these magazines, our students will see reflections of themselves. They will gain insight into their own mental health, habits, and choices. They will see examples of other teenagers overcoming obstacles and growing into a citizen of the world.
