  • Let's Get Reading Decodable Books!

    Funded May 5, 2023

The books are here, unpacked, sorted and ready to be used in the class!! Classroom procedures are being taught, so we can have our small group reading time. We are now reviewing letter sounds and practicing blending the letter sounds. This will help us decode the words in the books. These decodable readers will help the students use the skills they are being taught to sound out the words.

Studies have shown how important it is in a student's life to be reading on grade level in 1st grade. Because of generous donors like you, you are giving this class of students a good start on a skill that will last a lifetime.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mattecheck

  • Let's Get Reading With Decodable Readers!

    Funded May 19, 2023

Thank you so much for your donation. The books have arrived in my class, are sorted and are ready to begin to be used in the coming weeks. These books will be used in small group reading. We are currently reviewing our letter sounds in first grade. This will help with the students decoding words. The books that have been purchased are decodedable readers. The students will be able to use their knowledge of letter sounds to figure out the words in these books.

Studies have shown, how important early literacy is to a student's success in school. With your generous donations, this class of 1st graders will be able to enjoy reading and feel successful in school.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mattecheck

  • Make Learning Phonics Fun!

    Funded Jun 11, 2021

First and foremost, I would like to say thank you to the donors that made it possible for my class to get these tablets.

Here is the reason why I chose to create a Donors Choose project last school year. As everyone knows, last school year was extremely challenging for administrators, teachers, all support staff and especially for the children. Many of my students face food and housing insecurity on a regular basis. In many of our students' lives, school is the one constant, they come to school and they know what to expect.

Last spring I decided to find something the students could use instead of a whiteboard and dry erase marker. The teacher next door had seen these reusable tablets on Amazon and told me about them. Our school does not have any extra money for such purchases, so I discussed with other teachers how I could purchase them. One teacher had a project funded by Donors Choose and told me about it. I went immediately to our tech support person and discussed how to create a project.

After I posted my first project, I cannot tell you how excited I was, it was funded so quickly. As a result of my project being funded and delivered so quickly, my last year's class was able to use them before the end of the year. When the boxes were delivered to my class the students were so excited! Since the tablets were delivered they have been used by students in my last year's class, summer school and this year's class.

The students find it fascinating how they have different colors as they are writing on the tablets. I am constantly hearing "This is so cool" as we are using them. The buzz and happy chatter is wonderful to hear. These tablets have definitely helped make phonics and learning more fun. It has also given a little joy to some 6 year old's that have had a rough start to their school years. Thank you again for supporting my project and Donors Choose.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mattecheck

One of the strategies I use to teach phonics is Orton Gillingham. My class uses a multisensory approach to help learn phonics. I am currently using whiteboards, dry erase markers, and socks to clean the whiteboards. The boards unfortunately have to be replaced year after year and I also have to purchase dry erase markers throughout the year. I am looking to use the reusable tablets I have requested to reduce cost over the next few years. The students would be so excited to have a new interactive way of learning. Our reading specialist has recently obtained these tablets for her small group. When the students use them in her small group, they are very engaged in the activity. These reusable tablets will also be used in my classroom to practice math skills and writing words.
