  • Globes Will Put the World at My Students' Fingertips!

    Funded Jun 1, 2021

In today's school systems, there is a huge amount of pressure on teachers to only focus on "literacy" and math, often giving short shrift to vital subjects like Social Studies. However, as you know, being 'literate' includes an understanding of local, regional, and global geography. During our Social Studies conversations last year, it was clear that students needed a more concrete understanding of where New York City, New York State, and the U.S.A. are in the world. You have helped my former second graders (now third graders) at PS 241 to become literate citizens by literally helping me to put the world at their fingertips.

Thank you so much for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McAlister

  • Help Kids Learn Their History

    Funded May 28, 2021

With your help, I have been able to give students the gift of thinking critically about our nation's history. As James Loewen exposed in his extensive research into American history textbooks, our students have a shameful paucity of critical historical information to help them assess the ramifications of history on our current moment and possibilities for the future. The gift that you have helped me to give to my remote second graders (who are now big third graders!) of A Young People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn will be an invaluable resource for them for years and years to come.

Thank you so very much for your support, we could not have done it without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McAlister

These books will be invaluable resources for students for years to come. Through Zinn, they will be able to see how rich a tapestry history can be. These rising third graders have already developed a passion for decolonized history and this book will support their growth along this journey. Zinn's chapter on European relationships with the Indigenous people of this continent will enrich the conversations we've begun this year, and the book covers American life all the way up to the current era. This is a resource to which students will be able to return year after year for primary source documents which detail whichever phase of American life they are curious about at the moment.
