My studio is composed of 35 woodwind students that love creating chamber music ensembles for performance. It suits us beautifully since we are a small group. I currently depend on students to bring their own instruments from their home schools, and our school owns 3 clarinets and 2 bass clarinets for anyone who is unable to bring their own instrument. Over the years, my students have begged to form a clarinet choir ensemble, but the literature for this unique ensemble requires auxiliary instruments to make the sound complete. Chamber music is the key to providing students with the opportunity to build community, share ideas, be responsible, and learn to work as a team. The small musical ensembles allows for students to share their skills with each other and offers class mentorship and leadership opportunities during the learning process. Students also learn to plan concert presentations, and learn to build short and long-term goals together. The addition of obtaining an alto clarinet for my students would boost the colors of our woodwind studio to fill in the missing puzzle in forming a full-fledged clarinet choir. It’s unique sound would bring about many opportunities to be played, performed, and featured in numerous presentations for years to come.
