All of our students deserve a safe area that they can turn to. A classroom is reflective of the teacher's attitude and should act as a home for the student. The classroom environment which a teacher creates can either encourage or discourage a student's ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class. The classroom environment should not only foster cooperation and inclusivity, but also create an atmosphere of mutual respect. Since my students are identified as Special Needs, they are sensitive to the atmosphere. In a classroom with well-designed lighting, my students will experience more feelings of focus and calm. Moreover, items such as the balance ball chair and "Big Joe" chair will help my classroom reduce fidgeting and prevent restlessness, providing an outlet for excess energy. Furthermore, the filing cabinet was considered as a place where students can place completed assignments and to-do tasks in an effort to have a place for them to keep organized. I ask myself, is the classroom inviting and warm? Will my students feel comfortable, especially those with certain sensitivity issues? These questions help ensure that there is purpose in the design of the room.
