In the English Language Arts' classroom, this novel will be used in conjunction with our social studies content to explore an important part of history - "the true story of Salva, one of some 3,800 Sudanese 'Lost Boys' airlifted to the United States beginning in the mid 1990s." Scholars will be given their own personal copy of this print-rich novel so that they can mark the text (annotate) to engage in writing assignments and discussions around the text. Annotating allows scholars to focus on unfamiliar vocabulary, text evidence, identifying central ideas, explicit and implicit details, and character traits. These are important skills needed to develop overall literacy.
