Studies have shown that when schools provide curriculum and programs that focus on social-emotional intelligence and mindfulness, it has lowered the need for health and mental services, delinquency rates, and disciplinary measures within the school.
Over the past fifteen years, I have seen my high school students increasingly exhibit a growing gap when it comes to possessing healthy coping tools and strategies for dealing with trauma. With the outbreak of Covid19, my students' lack in healthy coping tools became even more apparent. This is where Breathe For Change can make a difference. Breathe For Change is a wellness training program specifically designed for educators, that teaches wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga to help empower students (and educators) to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves.
This project will help cover part of the cost of the Breathe For Change training program. This training will enable me to share the tools and strategies I’ve learned with not just my future students, but with the faculty in my building, and the district as a whole. Upon graduation from Breathe For Change, I will be a nationally certified yoga instructor and qualified to lead wellness and social-emotional learning programs at my school for both students and educators in meaningful areas of meditation, philosophy, anatomy, S.E.L. strategy, and yoga practice. As an educator and a single parent, I have experienced firsthand the benefits of using yoga and mindfulness to cope with stress and the challenges of life. I am so excited to participate in this training program so that I can pass those helpful tools and strategies on to my students and the staff in my district!
