Kinder Mathematicians

Funded Sep 27, 2023

During our morning meetings, I told my Kindergarteners some exciting news about receiving new materials for our classroom. They were cheering and amazed when they saw the new math tools they would start using. Right away, I let them explore the math tools because they were so curious! We did a whole class discussion on how to use math tools. The following day when I taught math, I introduced a 3 Act Math Phase word problem that students will solve with the new math tools. Students began unpacking the word problem and explaining their thinking to their partners about how they would use the math tools to solve the problem. When it was time for them to solve the problem independently, some students could use the two-color counters and some used the buttons to solve the problems. It's incredible how students can choose which math manipulative they feel comfortable using.

In addition, students were learning about the different shapes. Thanks to the pattern blocks and template students can identify and create patterns through wonderings and noticings. This is an important skill because students can compare their work with other students. Students are always looking forward to math because math is all hands-on and fun. Thank you for the generous donations for my class. They are thrilled!”

With gratitude,
