Celebrating diversity daily in the classroom is vital to students. These books will allow students to see themselves reflected in the literature they read in our classroom. This will help students make connections between their learning and their own identities. These books give students a empowerment through feeling seen and by understanding that their voices are important. As a teacher I work hard to create opportunities for these experiences of empowerment through the diversity of the books on the classroom shelves, and students are more engaged in independent reading when they have access to culturally relevant texts. These books will serve as whole class read-alouds, and as books for independent choice reading so that students can engage with these books on many levels. These books will give my students opportunities to build community together by reading books about people who are different than they are, which allows them to have a chance to build empathy. The more my students relate to one another and realize that each of us is unique, that we are all different, and that differences make us powerful, the stronger our community becomes, and the more likely my students will embrace those who are different outside of the classroom.
