Make Reading Magic!
Funded Jun 23, 2023Your donation has made a noticeable difference in the quality of our day. Children are more engaged, they smile more often, we laugh together, and our conversations about interesting people and places are deep and meaningful. I wish you could see how the magazines have affected our classroom. One older student said, "I wish we'd had these in seventh grade!" Motivation is not a problem for any student when we use the Scholastic periodicals you gave us.
I appreciate the fact that our students are exposed to modern issues involving a world they will soon inherit, a world with both problems and successes. In this area we are not really familiar with phenomena such as sinkholes or desert survival, but we can relate to human frailty and perseverance. Wow, your donation has made a difference! Thank you so much for your generosity. Please know that your funds are helping educate kids in our community.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Benzel

Keep Current with Scholastic Magazines
Funded Nov 29, 2022Do you carry around a book, magazine, Kindle, or other reading materials? I can't imagine life without print or digital information and entertainment. Mercer students are genuinely interested in articles and stories. The materials you donated to our classroom DO MAKE a DIFFERENCE. I wish you could see the reception the Scholastic news magazines get from even the most struggling readers. Students work independently and in groups - and always with enthusiasm. It's fun to watch!
The magazines provide current material that kids appreciate. A sixth grade student said, "These magazines are so much more relatable than the textbook. Can we just do these?"
Another student said, "I love the plays in here! I can't wait for Fridays!"
Times are tough with classroom budgets, so Donors Choose is a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you, dear Donors, for your continued support and generosity. Our local and broader community of Mercer supporters need to know how important your donations are to our little school. The materials you funded are valuable in so many ways. You are incredible people. Thank you for thinking of Mercer kids!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Benzel

Funded Aug 18, 2022It's a new year, and we give thanks for the generosity you've shown in support of our youth.
Our students benefit from having up-to-date, quality materials. You've helped provide these opportunities. It's very obvious that students love engaging books and periodicals, and your donations have helped provide these gifts.
Thank you for your support. Just before the holiday break, one fourth grader said, "I want to do this the whole vacation." Students are more alert, more engaged, and very enthusiastic with the new periodicals, and they especially enjoy the dramatic readings. Class time has been transformed to a lively acting studio.
Once again, our school appreciates the support from the community, and my students are especially grateful for your thoughtfulness! Thank you so much!”

Funded Aug 9, 2021We are busy exploring research topics and finding reliable resources. The tree octopus really stumped us, and we used skills provided in the pamphlets you donated to make an informed judgment as to the accuracy of information. We are slowly improving on note-taking skills, and we LOVE to build paragraphs with a topic sentence and details. We are even getting better writing clever closing sentences for our paragraphs. Writing a longer report will be easier due to the experience provided in the magazines we've been able to use.
Everyone benefits from the materials you donated. Thank you for your generosity. One girl said, "I loved this unit. I learned a lot about myself." Students took more responsibility for their own learning and development. The "discovery" was delightful to observe. Thank you for this opportunity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Benzel
