These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they will provide positive examples and models for social emotional growth and learning and also allow them to use real life objects, particularly the sensory items and art supplies to practice the social emotional skills such as coping and self-regulation, as well as build and nurture social relationships. The lessons that will be taught utilizing these materials would be focused on student self-regulation and coping as well as highlighting important social interactions and practices. Specifically, self regulation lessons would consist of identifying and understanding feelings, within oneself as well as others, and learning and practicing positive coping skills like breathing, positive self-talk, exercise, talking to a trusted adult, creating art and so many others. The self regulation lessons would also comprise of using art supplies such as painting, coloring, creating glitter jars, and many others to help students practice calming down and even to identify how they're feeling and other specifics that pertain to their goals and self growth. Additionally, social interaction lessons could be comprised of any of the following topics such as, following directions, taking turns and sharing, learning how to respond to others and show kindness and empathy, as well as addressing inappropriate social behaviors and responses like using one's body to hurt another, using unkind words, bullying, or using destructive behavior in response to a variety of situations. The materials outlined in the project will most be utilized in individual and group settings with students.
