Funded Aug 17, 2021Science (Un)Fair Middle School Mayhem is beyond exciting. I have been able to teach my students how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words while looking at C.T. Walsh's descriptive word choice. He writes very explicitly with the intent to make the reader laugh. That type of writing is often called "slow writing". That is a writing style that I teach my students. It is writing while taking the time to explain in detail, bits and pieces of events in hopes to make the reader feel like they are there with the characters. Students of mine are also found sounding out words that they cannot pronounce and then just laughing while reading the book too.
Reading in my class is done to comprehend the text, get the author's purpose while using comprehension anchor charts and summarizing parts of the text. Other times, you can catch my students and I doing a shared reading together. This is where I read a few pages aloud, my students take turns reading a few sentences aloud, and then we read half of a page aloud together. We do this about three times per week.
My books arrived at my school on August 26th. I handed the books to my students on the first day of school, which was September 2nd and 5 students finished the book by September 13th. That is how much my students enjoyed their books.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Woodard
