My students love printmaking. Unfortunately, our school has very limited resources, not even enough for a class set, so we can only do printmaking projects in small groups, and only currently with the 6th grade, which is a shame because gyotaku and printmaking have so many cross curriculum applications. These supplies let us experiment and learn hands on not only artmaking skills, but integrating science, math, and social studies concepts. Imagine kindergarteners seeing and experiencing how printing works, 1st graders discovering monoprinting and why it only works once, 2nd graders designing an aquarium habitat of printed fish, 4th graders printing native fish and labeling their parts, 5th graders creating a fish dinner collage with garnish, serving platter, and tablecloth. There are so many applications!
