In April of this year, I began teaching in my first full-time teaching assignment in a very diverse fifth grade classroom. As a first year teacher, I inherited the classroom library of a teacher who retired. Most of the books are old, dusty, and will not capture student interest with their current states. Additionally, I have decades-old shelves to display these books that desperately need updating. There is nowhere for the students to sit and read besides their desks. My goal as a new teacher is to create the most welcoming and positive learning environment possible. I want to begin by ensuring my library is filled with books that are inviting to motivate my readers to engage with them and books that are inclusive to represent my diverse students. I have selected various new books and classics for this project to start building my library. Additionally, the shelves will create a clean and welcoming environment for my students to feel comfortable in while they sit on the cozy cushions. By funding this project, you are inspiring a group of young readers with infinite potential!
