In sixth-grade math, we are always striving to find ways to keep the students engaged and trying their best on their math tasks. One way we have found that works for our students is infusing their math problems with interesting games and tasks. For example, we have multiple giant Jenga sets that we painted the ends of and made coordinating task cards containing the math problems. If they solve a problem on a red task card, they then have to pull a red Jenga block. I plan to incorporate a similar strategy for the Giant Connect 4, Tic-Tac-Toe, and Yahtzee, using the Astrobrights paper to create task cards for each game. Having a variety of games and activities allows us to set up multiple stations in the classroom that the students can rotate through while continuing to practice their math concepts. After a long school year of Covid restrictions, and students spending a lot of their time in their seats behind computer screens, it is nice to see the students smiling and having fun with their classmates while learning.
