I am asking for math manipulatives because hands-on learning is a form of education in which children learn by doing. As you probably know, for most kids, sitting for long periods of time is challenging and not the best learning environment. For first graders, with such short attention spans and need to be moving, expecting them to sit at a desk and listen is virtually impossible. Instead of simply having the kids listen to me, they need to be engaged in math, using their creativity, solving problems, and working with each other. I believe that this will help my students stay engaged and focused on classroom learning. These manipulatives can be used to teach math all year. I want to take advantage of every opportunity I can to help these kids develop their math skills at a young age. A recent study reported that a child’s math knowledge at the start of kindergarten predicts later academic achievement better than early reading or attention skills!
