5th graders are amazing beings! They are becoming more aware of the world around them and are super fun to talk to about almost anything. In 5th grade, we like to do whole class novel studies at the end of the year. We have many older titles in our building to choose from, however, our collection of class sets could use some updating! Superman Smashes the Klan was published in 2020 and is a graphic novel. 5th graders LOVE graphic novels. This novel by Gene Luen Yang is set in Metropolis in 1946. It's based on a series of episodes from "The Adventures of Superman," the radio show from the 40s. The premise is that a Chinese-American family has moved from Chinatown into Metropolis and they face discrimination there, primarily from a group called the Klan of the Fiery Cross. In addition to the story of the Lee family, Superman in this story is just beginning to learn where he's from and of all the powers he possesses. We see Superman/Clark Kent struggle to fit in, and you see how his story parallels many immigrants' stories. This is a classic Superman good vs evil story with an engaging plot and amazing artwork. We couldn't put it down when we as teachers read it, and we can't wait to share it with our students as well!
