  • Comfortable and Calming Counseling Office

    Funded Mar 1, 2024

Thank you so much for contributing to my project to help make the counseling office at Woodland Hills Academy Middle School a place that is comfortable and calming. My students were so excited to see the addition of huggable, soft squishmallows to help ease their anxiety and rubix cubes and other toys to help take their mind off those things that are bothering them.

Thanks to your generosity, I also have enough to give students items when I can see how much they are benefitting from something in the counseling office and I know how much a gift will mean to them.

Your contributions bring smiles to students each and every day.

    Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weir

  • Calming Area

    Funded Jan 3, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to my project. The stress reducing items have been a great help to the many students who come to the counseling office with feelings of anxiety and depression. They have made such a difference and have created a place where they can relax and where they have the tools to help them deal with their anxious feelings.

I have found many opportunities to give away items to students so that they have those tools at home and in their classrooms.

My students and I are so very grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weir

  • Stress Reducing Tools for the Counseling Office

    Funded Nov 5, 2021

All of the stress reducing tools that I received have been used daily for months. Students come to the counseling office with a variety of issues and concerns. They immediately feel more comfortable with sharing their feelings when they are able to relax, keep their hands busy with a fidget toy or play a game of Uno with me. Sometimes, a student is so clearly helped by the fidget toy that I will give it to him/her as a gift to have in class and at home.

I am so thankful that I have this valuable resource to share with my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weir

  • A Calming Space to Heal and Rejuvenate

    Funded May 7, 2021

Thank you so much for helping to make the Woodland Hills Academy Counseling Office a space where students and staff can come to relax, take a deep breath and feel supported. I have not yet had the opportunity to share the space with students because of Covid protocols, but fully anticipate having students being able to visit in August.

I have used it to meet with colleagues and every person who has come into the office has commented on how the space makes them feel: calm, relaxed, peaceful, zen, comfortable.

I am certain that our students will experience those same feelings and it will help them to get through the difficult transition back to being on campus. My plan is to have students meet in small groups with me so they can reconnect with their peers in a safe and supportive environment.

So many of our students experienced the death of close family members from Covid 19 and the trauma and pain of the past year cannot be underestimated. Your contribution will help every student at WHA and we are very, very grateful for your support of the social emotional well-being of our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weir

This classroom project was brought to life by SONIC Drive-In and 6 other donors.
Yesterday afternoon, I returned to my middle school in Los Angeles after over one year of being gone. I walked into the counseling office and immediately felt sad. It was dingy, cluttered and unwelcoming. The walls were covered in old, ugly posters. The entire office had giant desks and tables circa 1950 that were covered in old papers and dust. I thought of our students who would be returning to the school after a year of trauma and isolation and I realized that I needed to do something to change this space. The students coming to the counseling office would need a calm and peaceful environment to decompress and take a deep breath. I want to create a space with nice lighting, comfortable seating , and beauty so that students and teachers can relax. I have included social emotional games and toys for the students to participate in with the counseling staff and each other. I want the students, who come into the counseling, to feel like they matter and our school community cares deeply about them and their feelings.
