Play-based learning helps to support early childhood learners from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. When children participate in playful experiences independently or guided by a teacher, it allows an opportunity to practice new knowledge that is learned. While the Science curriculum we use to provide content is rich and challenging, it can be enhanced with materials that are engaging to students that tap into their imaginative and creative strengths. When students learn about animal and plant adaptations, they will reinforce learned concepts in play based learning centers. They will use the Plant Instant Learning center with partners to identify the parts of the plants and talk about the structures that help the plant survive. Students can explore the oceans where sea turtles and other animals live while discussing why some animals are only found in certain habitats while creating the Whole Wide World Map Jigsaw puzzle. Using the Sea Turtle Life Cycle Model, students will be able to identify the stages of development and compare these stages with other animals they have learned about. The Animal Match game will allow students to discuss habitats and how animals each have unique adaptations based on the environment in which they live. Students will be able to demonstrate conceptual understanding of the benefits and challenges for Spruce the Sea Turtle being released back into the ocean while engaging in dramatic play pretending to be marine biologists. Students can also use the sea animal toys as models for creating diagrams in their own aquarium or even place them on the jigsaw puzzle to locate their habitats. Our students would really enjoy using these materials! Having access to these materials would allow for our students to practice what they have learned in a more meaningful context!
