Over the last few years, we have had multiple students lose a loved one, from grandparents to parents to siblings. Grief and loss can be overwhelming for adults, but can also be confusing and hard to understand for young children. Grief can have a profound effect on school performance. Students often have difficulty concentrating, increased anxiety, and experience mood swings. Some develop separation anxiety and fear if they leave their primary caregiver something bad will happen. While we work hard to meet the emotional needs of our students every day, it often leaves us wanting to do more. The idea of tangible comforting items to put in the arms of our students immediately after a loss has become our goal. Comfort kits would allow us to immediately send home tools to help students process their loss and develop effective coping skills. They will help families learn to support their grieving students, regardless of the type of loss. And most importantly, they will give grieving students a soft object to hug at night, supplies to express their complex emotions in healthy ways, allowing them to continue to learn and grow.
