As a 1st year teacher, I have seen the impact of sitting in a single classroom with hard desks and chairs, all day, with no flexibility because of COVID. My students would benefit from having adjustable tables, desks, and various seating options (chairs, lap desks, etc.)to help them maintain focus throughout their day. Students would be given the opportunity to choose their seat based on their own needs. I am hoping to get these flexible seating options because sitting in a traditional chair and desk does not benefit every student. By providing students the opportunity to choose their seats, we are allowing them to take ownership over their learning needs (sitting at a table to collaborate in a group, using a lap desk to sit on the rug closer to the board, using a bean bag to feel more comfortable or a yoga ball to get the wiggles out, etc.) as well as their physical/bodily needs. Teaching students to advocate for themselves, and being assertive for what they need is part of our character education program and a crucial skill. Having students have the option with their own type of seating increases their willingness to learn, ability to focus and stay engaged, while also increasing classroom participation and decreasing redirection during lessons. Flexible seating is beneficial to students bodies and minds.
