The purpose of our project is to create the very first library in order to put books into the hands of students. Contrary to popular belief, all it takes to get students to read is to give them high-interest material. That's specifically what we are asking for. Leading experts in the education field argue that high-volume reading has many positive effects on students, including increasing vocabulary, comprehension, reading fluency, reading stamina, building empathy, and enhancing brain plasticity. On top of all these perks, reading impacts people on an intimate level too. For a person who has never independently finished a novel, a book can be an accomplishment. For a person who has experiences that don't get talked about in school, a book can be validation. For a person who wants to experience new and exciting things, a book can be a window into another world. For a person who’s recently undergone trauma, a book can be therapy. And for a person who just needs a break from reality, a book can be an escape. It is for all these reasons and more that we are asking for your donations. Below are some quotes from actual past students reflecting on their experiences with reading: “I realized that reading a book is more than just reading a book… it opens your imagination.” “Now I look at reading as a nice escape instead of a punishment.” “[Reading] helps me forget about the bad parts of life.” “Just the way it was [written] made me feel emotions I never thought I could feel about a book.” “I used to think reading was necessary, but it wasn’t a huge deal. I was wrong.” “When I graduate, I will definitely still be reading; it’s a good way to occupy your mind and learn."
