Capital High School is dedicated to offering teens and young adults (15-22) flexible scheduling; resources to support food, housing, and utilities; several student engagement activities; and providing a supportive environment. BUT... our classrooms leave much to be desired. While our actions often get students back into school, students still often do not want to be there. Serving a population of students who most schools find to be "difficult" with limited funding, often makes students feel like they are not valued or are forgotten about because they do not fit into the "ideal mold" that other schools want them too.
My mission is to create a classroom to match the enthusiasm of the staff and supports by offering flexible seating, motivational posters, alternative lighting, and interactive team based activities that foster growth and team work in order to create an classroom environment that entices the students to stay in school longer and increases their daily attendance rate; showing them that they are valued and deserve the same quality education and supports as every other student-they deserve all of the HYPE.
Many students already flock to my lab simply because of how I structure and run my room; but gray walls, hard uncomfortable seating, limited table space, and limited places to plug in their computers, tablets, and phones makes leaving school and working at home more enticing (but less productive). By increasing the number of seating options through floor seating and lap desks, offering motivational and colorful wall decorations, alternative lighting to reduce the impact of harsh fluorescent lighting, and access to more charging stations for technology, students will be more interested in staying in school and being more productive than they are when they work at home.
