The bottom line is that when the kids are moving, they learn and retain information more efficiently and are less prone to act out. Cycling helps to put the brain and body back into hormonal balance, regulating mood and behavior. One study, through RTSG Neuroscience Consultants, showed that after kids with ADHD started cycling, the riding positively altered brain activity towards more "normal" brain patterns, increased attention span, and boosted their mood. With increased frontal lobe activity (executive function - planning, organizing, and initiating) the student (and their brain) are in a better position to make better decisions. And we can not forget the obvious bonus, overall improved fitness, and BMI. These pedalers are going to help my students be able to focus during any class. They are small enough and quiet enough as to not add more distraction to our busy classrooms. Some have said that focused, non-disruptive students with healthy minds and bodies, would be the equivalent to finding a unicorn so my hope is with these pedalers I can begin finding my unicorns.
