My 24 first grade students come from moderate poverty. They attend a public K-5 school in Illinois. I have 11 girls and 13 boys. Many of them are being introduced to the love of reading for the very first time this year. However, they do not have the support and or financial ability to use, access, or purchase books for them selves. I do not have a large library, and the class size keeps growing every year. They love to act out plays, read with partners, and reread any book I have read aloud to them.
