Identifying, learning, and appropriately responding to our students' emotional needs is both necessary and important. I hope to use these supplies to maintain an emotionally safe and conducive environment for my students, and to implement new strategies to meet their daily needs. I can accomplish this with a bookcase, a toy chest, markers, and other supplies. After an emotionally charged year, I plan to implement a "calm down corner" in my classroom for the next school year, and for years to come. Even as adults, we need time to regulate our feelings and emotions during the day. Why should we expect any different from our students? However, we have to be willing to teach them calming strategies, and include safe spaces in our classrooms for them. A designated space for my students to feel safe and regulate their emotions during the day will help them lead a more successful day of learning. Supplies and strategies are just one part of building a safe classroom and community. However, providing adequate access and individualized spaces for their personal use is where the growth will rocket. Also, they deserve it!
