Fun-loving First graders love to learn and move their bodies! During the year in first grade there is so much growth that is made academically, socially, and emotionally. Students not only come out of first grade reading but they also gain a great deal of independence. Students start the year relying on explicit directions and consistent reassurance that they are doing the right thing. As the school year progresses they begin to realize what they are capable of doing, allowing them to make more positive decisions for themselves. Each child is different and what may work for one child, may not work for another. Offering a variety of flexible seating within the classroom can allow each child to become more independent and explore how they learn best. The various tools I am hoping to have funded through this project are geared towards various needs students may have when sitting and learning in the classroom. Some students may see a wobble stool as a better fit because it can allow them to wiggle their bodies while still focusing on their work and not being distracting to others. Others may just need to move their feet using a fidget band. Offering other seating options besides regular chairs can be a great benefit to all.
