  • Sandtray Resources Needed for School Counseling Office

    Funded Mar 29, 2025

Yay, my project was funded! I am looking forward to adding these resources to my counseling office. My students will be happy to have new toys to choose from! Hoping a time comes when teachers don’t have to supply their own classrooms, but until then, your generosity is much appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hart

  • School Counselor Library: Books for Justice and Social Development

    Funded Nov 18, 2024

I love the way a good book can engage students while teaching them an important lesson. Additionally, picture books are a great way to provide scaffolding to help English language learners understand the concepts of the lesson. Over half of the students at my school are English language learners, so picture books are an incredibly valuable tool for me. This project has even helped me to start building a collection of Spanish language books, which have been amazing to use in our Spanish immersion classrooms. Thank you for helping me to make these valuable lessons accessible to all of my students!”

  • Making Social and Emotional Learning Fun!

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

The sand tray, games and books have been amazing! It's been satisfying to watch my students work out problems and feelings through play. The sand tray has been incredible for this purpose and kids are naturally drawn to the sand and toys. I've gained some important insight into my young students' perspectives and emotions through play that they could not have verbalized through traditional talk therapy.

The games have been a great tool for teaching cooperation, social skills and emotion regulation and the books are a great addition to some of my classroom lessons.

Thanks again for your generous donations! They are truly making a difference for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hart

  • Building Character and Social Justice Through Children's Picture Books

    Funded Mar 7, 2021

I wanted to take a minute to share with you the positive impact your donation has had on my students. I love using picture books in my classroom lessons and small groups. Recently, I read, "The Color Monster" with a small group whose focus is emotion regulation. Many times young children become frustrated and act out when they don't have the words to describe how they are feeling. Books like, "The Color Monster" can help them begin to label their feelings. After we read the book, they each colored their own monster and explained why they chose the colors they did.

As the school counselor, many of my lessons focus on character building, and books like "The Big Umbrella" are an impactful way to teach kindness and inclusivity. Children don't always remember a lesson on kindness, but they remember the stories within the lesson and I hope that the message within the story sticks with them too.

Next year, with the help of these beautiful books, I hope to focus even more on teaching my students about diversity, social justice, and kindness. Thank you for giving me the tools to help me accomplish this!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hart

As the school counselor, I often use picture books in classroom lessons, small groups and with individual students. I'd love to expand my library so that I have books on hand to address the needs of my students as they arise. I've found that one of the best ways to teach young children about emotions, character traits and social justice is through picture books. Picture books are engaging and relatable and are a simple and effective way to reach students of all ages! I want books that reflect the diversity of my students in the book's characters and experiences.
