DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE SUPPLIES Kindergarten is UNIQUE! As you know, kindergarten has unique needs. Our core curriculum is dependent on developmentally appropriate supplies - crayons, pencils and scissors. This is our curriculum and is used daily throughout our lessons. Not just an art project. Larger crayons and pencils are imperative to our students’ learning. The larger tools are designed to meet younger learners' grip needs, strength building and fine motor skills. Our learners find success in personal tools and pencil boxes within an organized space. Due to the pandemic, we are seeing an exorbitant amount of children in need of Tier One interventions. When supplies are not developmentally appropriate, this can create frustration, lack of participation and a hesitation to be a risk taker. Not to mention a loss of instructional time due to breakage, loss of supplies and general emotional shut down. NAEYC defines “developmentally appropriate practice” as methods that promote each child's optimal development and learning through a strengths-based, play approach to joyful engaged learning. Please help us to help our children to be successful!
