For the past four years my students and I have done small scale plantings of various bean plants and tomato plants. Planting their own seeds and seeing them sprout into beautiful plants supplements their education in reading, math, and science through Project Based Learning. Their understanding of how plants grow, their structure, as well as their environmental jobs increases their engagement in ways that makes learning hands-on and very concrete. Our program also provides opportunities for the general education students on our campus to mentor our students in gaining access to Common Core curriculum throughout the year. Their garden experiences; paired with the curriculum creates life-long environmental and social interaction opportunities. Our previous unification projects have created bridges between special education students and general education students in ways that were non-existent and have resulted in general education students asking their teacher for opportunities to work with our students. Our ultimate goal is to create meaningful and equitable team-building opportunities that every Desert Willow student can carry into their futures, while promoting independent living skills and confidence in their ability to making meaningful contributions to their families and surrounding communities.
