There are many benefits of children reading non-fiction books. Non-fiction books prepare children for later grades, they expand a child's vocabulary, offer solutions to real world problems, teach children about the world they live in. I also have and ESL student and non-fiction books are a great aid to 2nd language learners. Most importantly, not all children find their love of reading through fiction. Children's non-fiction books can motivate a reluctant reader by capitalizing on their curiosity and interest in the world around them. A non-fiction library library will give my students much needed exposure to these books. The students use of this non-fiction library will lead to an increase in my student's curiosity and create new inquiry. Through these non-fiction books students will be able to develop greater cognitive skills as they learn to engage with the books they are reading. My school has just adopted the Accelerated Reader program. It is an excellent program that motivates and allows students to select books that are on a reading level just right to them. The books that I have requested range from a 3.0 reading level to a 6.4 reading level so each child in my classroom will be able to find non-fiction books on his/her own reading level. I plan on using the book ends to pull the popular fiction series that I already have as well as the popular non-fiction series (that I am requesting through donors choose) and show case them in different areas throughout my room to pique their interest and lead them on a path to becoming a life long reader. The comfy chair will be used to motivate students to read and a different student will be chosen to read in the chair daily during our Accelerated Reading time!
